When asked about the similarities and differences between the two governors, Ogene spoke during an interview with SYMFONI TV and argued that Obi had a more peaceful and inclusive style of leadership during his time in Anambra.
While challenging Oshiomhole's track record on security management, he brought up the alleged assassination of his Principal Private Secretary, Olaitan, in the presence of Olaitan's family, which occurred during Oshiomhole's tenure in Edo State.
Additionally, the lawmaker stated that Oshiomhole devoted a considerable amount of his time to partisan disputes involving adversaries, established institutions, and state legislative players.
Ogene brought up remarks made by Adams Oshiomhole, a former governor of Edo State and current senator, who allegedly downplayed the increasing support for Obi after he defected from the PDP.
In 2022, when Obi switched parties from the PDP to the LP, Oshiomhole reportedly claimed that there were "only four men tweeting from a room." (Ogene)
Later political events, according to the federal politician, demonstrated that the movement's scope was substantially larger than its detractors had believed.
Political influence cannot always be evaluated through traditional party institutions or established political networks, he said, pointing to the Labour Party's result in the 2023 presidential election as evidence of significant voter participation.
Ogene went on to say that the fact that Obi was able to gain so much support from the general public showed how important it is to gauge public opinion and focus on problems that ordinary people care about. He claims that political movements can grow quickly when people relate to a candidate's platform and feel their voices are being heard.
He made the point that political leaders should not be hasty to ignore new ideas and perspectives in the democratic arena. When people are inspired by specific topics, policies, or leadership choices that they believe may address current problems, he believes that voter views can change dramatically.
The congressman continued by saying that conventional political expectations, party hierarchy, and popularity do not matter as much as the interaction between political players and the electorate. He stated that politicians should always be in touch with the people to find out what they want and that public trust is still a major component in winning elections.
In his discussion on opposition politics in general, Ogene stressed the importance of a strong opposition to the survival of democracies. If there are viable alternatives, he argued, people will have more agency and the government will be more likely to listen and act in their best interests.
Politics, in his view, is a healthy part of democracies because it forces people to think critically, sparks conversations about policies, and gives voice to competing perspectives and ideas.
Ogene concluded by urging political actors, regardless of party, to stop depending on perceptions or ignoring opposing political movements and start tackling the issues impacting Nigerians.
During the ongoing process of preparing for future elections, he emphasised that the focus of political discourse should be on economic hardship, insecurity, infrastructure shortfalls, education, healthcare, and social development.
The politician emphasised that candidates' ability to relate to everyday individuals' hopes and worries greatly influences election results. He or she also stressed the importance of public trust and credibility in today's democracy Nigeria.
