‎According to a report by Punch, on Thursday July 2, 2026, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stated that he is unable to provide detailed information about the Asaba Massacre despite serving as a military officer during Nigeria’s civil war.

‎Obasanjo made the statement in Abeokuta while receiving historical materials, books, videos, and eyewitness accounts relating to the Asaba Massacre and other civil war events.

‎The former president acknowledged his involvement in the civil war but explained that he was not in a position to give a full account of what happened in Asaba, he noted that although he participated in military operations during the conflict, he did not have direct knowledge of all the events surrounding the massacre.

‎According to him, whenever discussions arise about the tragedy, he openly admits that he cannot provide detailed explanations of the incident, Obasanjo stressed the importance of preserving historical records and gathering testimonies from witnesses who experienced the events firsthand.

‎The former president stated that such efforts are necessary to help Nigerians understand their history and learn lessons from the past, he commended those working to document the civil war and the Asaba Massacre, he described historical documentation as an important tool for national reflection, healing, and unity.

‎Obasanjo stated that he would study the documents and audiovisual materials presented to him, he added that understanding past events remains important for building a peaceful future and ensuring that painful chapters in the nation’s history are not forgotten.

‎“I must confess, and you know that I was involved in the civil war. When people talk about the Asaba Massacre, I always confess that I cannot give details of it," he said.
