‘In Johannesburg There Is A Place Called Little Lagos, And Even South African Police Hesitate To Go There,’ Dr. Bashir Kurfi Raises Concerns About Crime And Nigeria's Challenges Abroad

Dr. Bashir Kurfi, a social commentator, former lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University's School of Business, and head of the Katsina Community Security Initiative, has raised concerns about insecurity, youth unemployment, and the image of Nigerians abroad, saying the country must address the root causes driving many citizens to leave.

Speaking in an interview with The Nigerian Tribune, Kurfi discussed several national issues, including the use of vulnerable youths during elections, unemployment, migration, and the role of multinational companies in Nigeria's economy.

According to him, although politicians may not directly recruit almajiri children during elections, they often rely on networks of political enforcers who take advantage of poor and vulnerable young people.

Kurfi argued that widespread unemployment and poverty have made many youths easy targets for political manipulation. He said leaders should focus on creating opportunities for young people instead of concentrating only on winning elections.

Drawing comparisons with South Africa, Kurfi referred to discussions on xenophobic violence and said unemployment and economic hardship are major factors behind many social problems.
