Osuntokun Warns: Even If Obi Becomes President, He Must Work With Powerful Institutions Like National Assembly and Judiciary

Former Political Adviser to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, Akin Osuntokun, has said that Nigeria’s political challenges go beyond who becomes president, stressing that any future leader, including former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, must operate within a system shaped by powerful institutions such as the National Assembly and the judiciary. Osuntokun made the remarks in a report published by The Sun News on May 31, 2026, where he examined Nigeria’s political structure and what he described as the country’s misplaced focus on presidential elections.

According to him, too much attention is placed on individual presidential candidates instead of addressing deeper constitutional and structural issues that shape governance in Nigeria. 

He argued that this imbalance has turned elections into intense contests for control of the presidency rather than opportunities to strengthen democratic institutions.

Osuntokun explained that Nigeria’s highly centralized system of governance has contributed significantly to this problem.
